SA bus network to use smart card system
22 Oct 2009

People travelling to South Africa for next year's football World Cup finals may be able to benefit from contactless smart card travel.

Volvo South Africa has already started building Port Elizabeth's Bus Rapid Transit system and it is expected to be completed early next year, reports the Weekend Post.

Muncipal spokesperson Kupido Baron said that the region is still finalising the deal with Volvo, which may result in a smart card transit system.

If this set-up is agreed, passengers will pay for their travel in a similar manner to the way Londoners use Oyster cards for their journeys around the English capital

When asked by the newspaper if Volvo would install smart card technology, Mr Baron said: "In all probability, yes. The municipality is still in negotiations with the service provider."

Football fans from countries such as Spain, England, Brazil and Argentina will descend on South Africa and rely on the country's transport network next summer.
