San Francisco commuters urged to adopt Clipper transit cards
1 Nov 2010
Commuters in San Francisco who use paper 'A' FastPass tickets will be required to switch to Clipper transit cards from Monday (November 1st).
According to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), people riding the Muni across the US city will now be able to preload the 'A' pass onto their Clipper cards.
The change is part of a shift towards a smart card travel system that has been underway since the summer. Other paper passes will be phased out between now and next April.
From October 17th to 29th, more than 3,200 Muni customers purchased an 'A' Pass for their Clipper card, with 'M' Pass sales reaching 2,600 over the same period.
Muni and the MTC hope to see 40,000 A Pass sales on Clipper transit cards during the November sales period, which runs through to November 16th.
Clipper can be used to pay fares on a number of transit systems across the Bay Area, including Muni, Bart, AC Transit, Caltrain, Golden Gate Transit & Ferry and Dumbarton Express.
Together, these operators carry more than 80 per cent of all Bay Area transit passengers, according to the MTC.
