San Francisco residents turn to transit card
25 Aug 2010
Residents of San Francisco are increasingly adopting the city's transit card, it has been revealed.
The Clipper card was used 93,800 times to pay for journey's across the city during the first week of August - an increase of 11 percent compared to the previous week, reports sfgate.com.
Furthermore, 240 per cent more trips were paid for with the card compared with the same period last year during the pilot of the scheme.
Five transport operators have introduced the card, allowing users to travel on the city's buses, ferries and trains, while a further two firms plan to deploy the service by the end of the year.
The Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the city's transport agency, aims to have the card used for 650,000 journeys each weekday by the beginning of 2012.
John Goodwin, a spokesman for the agency, told the news provider: "We know there is a lot more growth ahead of us."
Clipper cards can be linked to a credit card or bank account to automatically top up credit when it drops below a certain level.
