Scottish technology firms supply smart cards for Nexus
31 Aug 2011

Commuters using Nexus transport systems to travel on Tyne and Wear's transit systems could be interested in recent developments regarding plans for contactless payments.

According to reports, two Scottish technology companies have signed up with the local transport authority to process thousands of smart card transactions as part of the scheme.

Ecebs and Glasgow-based hosting firm Iomart are set to validate and record passengers' journeys using cards and mobile phone payments.

Speaking of the recent announcement, David Burdett - Managing Director of Ecebs - suggested the move could have emerge as a result of the firms specialised technology, which delivers savings and reduces fraud.

We felt the support of a specialist hosting company with its own infrastructure … was the best way to deliver a technology platform which matched our software capabilities," he added.

Earlier this month, Nexus announced the launch of a new phase of work at the North Shields Metro station, where a new station building is set to be created.
