Signs of cashless society developing in Kenya
2 Sep 2009

Various reasons have been cited as reasons why contactless smart cards may be useful for Kenyan public transport.

According to the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, the technology may help curb corruption in the transport sector, as well as improve the services it provides.

Nairobi metropolitan development minister Njeru Githae was reported as saying that the current system was inadequate to deal with such matters.

In comments made at Baricho in his Ndia constituency, the minister said work is being done to streamline Nairobi's transport sector.

A technical committee made up of members of the metropolitan development ministry, ministry of transport, the city council of Nairobi and the Nairobi Central Business District Association are on the case, he added.

In the UK, eMoney network sQuidcard will soon be providing contactless smart cards for the people of Bolton, Greater Manchester to use on local buses.

The cards will ensure there is no need for residents to carry around cash to pay for their travel around the town.
