Single transit card scheme to be launched on NZ buses
31 Dec 2010

A single transit card programme is set to be launched on bus services in New Zealand, it has been revealed.

Regional transport agency Auckland Transport has signed a contract with e-money payment provider Snapper and bus operator NZ Bus to roll out the new technology from early next year.

This agreement supplements the previous deal that Auckland Transport agreed with technology firm Thales.

Customers who use services run by NZ Bus, such as North Star, Waka Pacific, Go West and Metrolink, will all be able to use the contactless smart card to pay for travel without the need for cash.

David Warburton, Auckland Transport's chief executive, revealed that the scheme will be expanded to include other modes of transport from 2011.

He said: "We will be following the deployment of equipment on NZ Bus services with the expansion of Integrated Ticketing on rail and ferry services. We expect the timing for this to be in the lead-up to the Rugby World Cup."
