The Smart Card Alliance has released two new white papers offering advice for transit agencies considering a move towards contactless smart card payment on their networks.

Across the US and the world transit agencies are upgrading their payment systems to incorporate contactless smart card technology.

In North America, local authorities in Calgary, Canada and Staten Island, New York have recently announced plans to implement smart card payment schemes, while municipalities as far afield as China, France and Taiwan already have similar schemes in place.

sQuidcard operate contactless smart card payment schemes across the UK, while also offering consumers the opportunity to pay for low value goods in retail outlets and schools.

Craig Roberts of the Utah Transit Authority and chair of the Transportation Council said: "Transit agencies across the United States are currently upgrading or planning to upgrade their fare collection systems, which is a significant investment.

"The Transportation Council has taken the initiative to provide resources … that can assist transit agencies in making these critical decisions."

Operating in the US and Latin America, the Smart Card Alliance Transportation Council seeks to promote the adoption of contactless smart card payment systems on transit networks across the region.
