Smart card travel comes to Australian bus network
30 Apr 2010

transit smart card is set to be trialled across the bus network in the Australian capital of Canberra from August, reports the Canberra Times.

The MyWay microchip smart card ticketing system will enable passengers on ACTION buses to quickly and securely travel across the city.

It will save users money as it automatically chooses the cheapest fare, while funds can never be lost from an account as the existing balance on a lost or stolen card can be transferred to a new one.

Chief Minister Jon Stanhope said cardholders will significantly benefit from the faster, more reliable service.

He told the newsapaper: ''It will offer bus users a reusable and rechargeable card for travel on all ACTION buses, helping to cut queues and travel times across the network.''

Passengers on the Arriva bus network in Bolton have access to a similar scheme to pay for journeys.

The sQuidcard, which can also be used in selected shops, can be topped up in stores or online so cardholders will not have to carry loose change.
