Smart card travel to be introduced to Liverpool
18 Dec 2009

Bus passengers in Liverpool will soon be able to use contactless smart cards to pay for their journey, according to reports.

The Liverpool Daily Post states that within five years the smart card travel system will be fully implemented, with residents in the area being issued with microchip tickets.

Alternatively people will be able to pay for their travel by swiping a pre-registered phone or bank card.

"The benefits of smart ticketing to passengers are clear - quicker, easier and potentially better value journeys," said Transport Secretary Lord Adonis.

He adds that is it hoped that the scheme will encourage more people to use public transport and contribute towards reducing congestion and pollution.

Liverpool is one of nine areas in the country to be pioneering the scheme.

In Bolton, contactless smart card technology has already been implemented, with residents able to pay for travel services as well as the use of leisure centres, libraries and other facilities on their sQuidcard.
