Smart cards required for Bath bike hire scheme
30 Sep 2011
Smart card travel is now in operation in Bath thanks to the launch of the city's first ever cycle hire scheme.
As part of Bath and North East Somerset Council's European CIVITAS Renaissance project, more than 50 bikes are available for hire for both residents of the city and visitors.
Requiring a contactless smart card to operate, the system - which is on a ten-month trial and being run by Italian company Bicincitta - will be similar to other schemes in place in European cities such as Rome and Turin.
Adrian Roper, south-west of England director for the Sustrans charity, said: "Introducing a cycle hire scheme is a positive step towards providing people with more travel choices and healthier, more environmentally-friendly options for doing short, local journeys around Bath."
People wishing to hire bicycles can pick them up from Orange Grove next to the Guildhall, Railway Place next to Bath Spa Station, Charles Street outside Green Park Station or Sydney Place outside the Holburne Museum.
