Smartcards to be used on Nottingham tram systems
4 Apr 2011

A contactless smart card payment system could be introduced on Nottingham's new tram system, it has been revealed.

The Tramlink Nottingham consortium has been selected to build and operate the extended network to Clifton and Chilwell, the Nottingham Post reports.

When the work is completed, the idea is to introduce platform machines and phase out the various tickets, cards and passes currently used by individuals.

These will be replaced with multi-use smart cards at the end of 2014.

Chairman of Tramlink Nottingham Roger Harrison said: "We will try to build on the plans for the council to introduce quite innovative ticketing systems where passengers will be able to travel on all modes of transport using smartcards."

Ticket conductors will be offered new roles when the changes are introduced.

Construction of the new services is expected to begin in autumn of this year and they will link directly to Nottingham train station.
