Somerset to use Oyster cards
11 Aug 2009
Somerset councillor Alan Gloak has indicated that introducing an Oyster card in the south-west county could have a number of benefits.
Both the older and younger generation of Somerset will be able to utilise the top-up payment scheme, he said.
According to the Somerset County Gazette, the initiative may start up locally in the imminent future, despite original plans suggesting that the roll-out date would be 2010-11.
Young people in further education, who currently have to pay for travel season tickets, would feel the benefits, Mr Gloak remarked.
He explained: "It's tough enough signing up for further education and training these days, without having added stress in terms of travelling."
There are various example of this type of cashless society around the UK. Indeed, people in Bolton, Greater Manchester will soon be able to use the sQuidcard as a form of payment on local buses.
