South African transit card scheme unveiled for World Cup
8 Jun 2010

A new transit card scheme has been launched in South Africa just days before the start of the World Cup.

The Gautrain Gold Card project has been introduced to be used by commuters on the country's new high-speed train service.

Passengers will be able to pay for travel quickly and securely using the pre-paid contactless smart card, eliminating the need for cash.

The new system will allow seamless travel around the region as customers can also use the card on bus networks and to pay for airport parking.

New justice minister Jeff Radebe said: "For too long the people of Gauteng were hoping and dreaming about the day when our public transport systems are on par with the rest of the world".

The £2.1 billion system will link ten train stations around the country by 2011 although there is currently only one line in operation.

England fans travelling to South Africa this week will be able to travel between Johannesburg and the OR-Tambo international airport.
