South Yorkshire considers Oyster-style scheme
31 Oct 2011

Commuters in south Yorkshire could soon be using an Oyster card-style contactless payment technology to pay for public transport journeys.

The plans for the new transit cards are being considered by local councillors on the South Yorkshire Integrated Transport Authority (SYITA).

Rather than paying for journeys with cash, people would top up their cards beforehand, paying for each journey in an instant when they board public transport.

"Users will be able to store e-money on their Yorcard and purchase single tickets with their card," a SYITA report claimed.

The government has already offered £4.4 million in funding to pay for the setup of the new scheme and transport specialist Stagecoach is already fitting card reading machines to its buses in the region.

According to SYITA, the new payment technology should be in place by April 2012.

Recently, plans to extend London's Oyster transit card to Hertfordshire and Essex were announced.
