Technology firm chosen to test South African transit card scheme
2 Feb 2011

A technology firm has been chosen to test the functionality of the new transit card programme in South Africa.

The South-African National Department of Transport (NDOT) has chosen global payments solutions provider Clear2Pay to test the new system and associated technology, including smart cards and payment terminals.

The new system will allow passengers on public transport to pay for their travel with a contactless-enabled bank card.

Jean de Crane, chief operating officer at Clear2Pay, expressed his delight at the deal and claimed that the firm is already familiar with the innovative nature of the South African travel industry.

He said: "Today, contactless ticketing solutions already ease the daily travel routine of millions of people around the world and Clear2Pay is eager to be instrumental in the further mass market adoption."

The South African government is currently in the process of modernising public transport throughout the city in preparation for the new system.
