TfL set to upgrade transit card readers
25 Feb 2011
Transport for London (TfL) is set to upgrade its transit card readers this year to allow passengers to pay for travel using contactless-enabled bank cards.
The regional transport agency has confirmed that all of the capital's buses will be fitted with them before the start of the 2012 Olympics to allow visitors the chance to get to events quickly and easily.
Following the implementation on London's 8,000 buses, the technology will then be installed across the rest of the transport network, including the underground, Docklands Light Railway, tram and London Overground.
Will Judge, TfL's head of future ticketing, claimed that, as over 12 million contactless debit and credit cards have already been issued in the UK, many commuters will benefit from the move.
He said: "As more people use their bank-issued cards to pay for their travel directly, TfL's costs will reduce, delivering better value for money for London's fare and taxpayers."
