Transit card prototypes for Bangalore
25 Mar 2011

A prototype contactless transit card has been developed by Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL).

The contactless smart card will allow people to travel on the Bangalore transit system without needing to make cash payments, according to the Deccan Chronicle.

The smart card was designed to be a user-friendly solution that can be waved past a reader without needing to be inserted, allowing for speedy and automated fare collection.

Tenders are now being floated to contractors who can implement the new system, which will then be rolled out for commuters.

A senior official for the rail corporation was quoted as saying: "These smart cards will be used for multiple applications, like parking, bus fares, paying toll fee and so on in the near future.

"The smart card becomes beneficial for shopping, too, as the BMRCL has plans to tie up with a host of outlets."

Meanwhile, calls are mounting for smart cards to be introduced on the Toronto subway, with National Post columnist Chris Upfold the latest to call for the technological innovation to be rolled out in the Canadian city.
