Transit card scheme coming to Qatar
2 Jul 2010

A new transit card scheme is set to be launched in Qatar, according to reports.

Public transport company Mowasalat has teamed up with Turkish smart card providers Kentkart to create the new technology, reports the Gulf Times.

Bus passengers in the country will be able to pay for travel by simply swiping their pre-paid cards over the provided reader.

The cards will also be able to alert users to live travel information, schedules and fares.

Mowasalat chairman Jassim Saif al-Sulaiti praised the new card readers which have been trialled across the country.

He told the news provider: "The new machine seems to have much more flexibility in its applications than what is being used at present."

In order to top-up the contactless smart cards, customers can either use machines located at bus stops or add credit to their account online.

The scheme is expected to be up and running by September 2010.
