Transit card scheme to be implemented in Regina, Canada
18 Feb 2010

A new transit card system could be rolled out in the city of Regina in the Saskatchewan area of Canada, according to reports.

Transit Director David Onodera told NewsTalk980 that the implementation of a contactless smart card scheme is hoped to cut the length of passenger waiting time, as well as providing transport executives with useful user information.

He said: "That system will also give us data on what ridership is doing on our routes: where everybody's getting on, what stop they're getting on, what time they're getting on."

This could help transit managers to plan routes more effectively and is hoped to contribute to an overall improvement of the city's public transport services, which will additionally see bus services expanded to residential areas.

Public transport users in Bolton, Greater Manchester are able to pay for their journeys on all Arriva buses in the town with contactless smart cards from sQuid. Taxi payments are set to follow later in the year.
