Transit card shipments set to boost smart card industry
1 Sep 2010
The growing number of transit card sales will help boost the international smart card industry, according to new research.
Market research firm Frost & Sullivan has released a report which reveals that the transit card market will experience an 11 per cent compound annual growth rate in shipments from 2009 to 2015.
Yiru Zhong, Frost & Sullivan Analyst, expressed their belief that transit card systems are becoming essential throughout the world.
They said: "Technology and social factors now make it essential that transit authorities deploy smart ticketing solutions as a result of ubiquitous connectivity and mobile devices."
Zhong added that smart card developers could act as an end-to-end vendor by operating as a system integrator within the transportation sector.
"They should also be able to promote greater standardisation. There are numerous opportunities for smart card vendors to lead in enabling secure and robust payment systems," they added.
