Transit card system for Adelaide's commuters 'by 2013'
8 Feb 2010

transit card system for public transport users in Adelaide, South Australia is expected to be up and running by 2013, according to reports.

The contactless smart card technology will allow passengers on trains, trams and buses in the city to pay for their journeys using swipe and go technology, the Independent Weekly states.

Patrick Conlon, Transport Minister, says: "Our current ticketing system has been in place for nearly 24 years - it has served us well but it is time to replace it as we continue our massive public transport revitalisation."

Commuters using the service will be able to top up their transit cards online, in shops or at stations and can touch the device against a reader, which will automatically deduct the correct fare, eradicating the need for paper ticketing.

Passengers on Arriva buses in Bolton, Greater Manchester are already enjoying the benefits that swipe and go technology can offer, thanks to a transit card from ePayments provider sQuid.

Later in the year taxi service users in the town will also be able to pay for their journey with a sQuidcard.
