Transit card system 'to be rolled out in San Diego'
20 Jan 2010
A transit card system is set to be fully rolled out in San Diego this spring, it has been reported.
San Diego News states that following a major software upgrade, the city's Compass card is now ready to be introduced, after initially being issued to 35,000 public transport users in 2009.
All 77,000 of the Metropolitan Transit System's monthly passholders will be issued with the cards by May 1st.
Public transport users will be able to use swipe and go technology to tap their credit card-sized pass under an electronic reader each time they board a bus or San Diego Trolley in the city.
Rob Schupp, Spokesperson for Metropolitan Transit, says that initial issues with the contactless smart cards have now been ironed out thanks to the recent software upgrade and the area is now ready for full implementation.
Residents of Bolton, Greater Manchester who travel on Aviva buses can enjoy the use of contactless smart cards from sQuid, which dispel the need for cash to buy a ticket.
Taxi payments are set to follow later in 2010.
