Transit cards come to Devon and Cornwall
8 Jul 2011

Smart card travel could well be seen in Devon and Cornwall in the near future, thanks to a £3 million grant from the Department for Transport's Local Sustainable Transport Fund.

All 3,400 registered bus services in the south-west of the UK will be provided with smart card equipment as a result, working in a similar way to the Oyster card in London, the Western Morning News reports.

Plymouth University's Institute of Sustainability Solution Research (ISSR) and South West Smart Applications are behind the drive, which will also potentially be integrated into other council services and public transport.

Andrew Seedhouse of the ISSR said he is "personally delighted" to be par of the project and working towards "making south-west England the first fully smart region for local bus travel in England".

A similar scheme is currently ongoing in Manchester, with bus company Stagecoach launching the first pre-paid passenger tickets in the city.
