Transit cards in Pittsburgh 'by the end of 2010'
4 Jan 2010

The Pittsburgh Port Authority says that it hopes to have a fully functioning transit card system in place for public transport passengers by 2010, according to reports.

Regular users of public transport systems will be able to permanently carry a contactless smart card, states the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, which will then allow the passenger to gain entry to buses or stations with the use of swipe and go technology.

Fares will automatically be deducted from the card, which will be topped up using eMoney.

Judi McNeil, spokeswoman for the Port Authority, says that the smart cards will undergo initial testing in summer 2010 and the system will then be explained to riders during a "huge educational blitz".

Contactless smart cards will be issued to residents next winter.

Transit cards will soon be wide-ranging in the nine largest urban areas of the UK, with the British government pledging £20 million to help implement the scheme.
