Transit cards 'successful' in Dubai
9 Jul 2009
The implementation of smart transit cards in Dubai has proved successful, according to initial take-up figures.
Statistics from the Roads and Transport Authority Public Transport Agency reveal that more than 618,000 transit cards have already been sold.
They provide smart card functionality to passengers on 37 bus routes in the emirate - almost half of all the services currently in operation.
Essa Abdul Rahman Al Dossari, chief executive officer of the agency, explains that the use of the cards on buses is the first step towards an all-round travel card.
This will ultimately incorporate metro and marine services on a single electronic money card.
In the UK, sQuidcard is one of the electronic money options being rolled out across transit systems, with Bolton due to be among the first places where it is launched.
The Integrated Transport Smartcard Organisation (ITSO) also operates in the UK and aims to ensure that smart cards and electronic tickets used on different transit systems comply with common standards to allow for wider uptake without obstacles.
