Transit cards to be extended to Hertfordshire and Essex
24 Oct 2011

Commuters in parts of Hertfordshire and Essex could make use of Oyster transit cards when using local rail services in the future.

Dutch firm Abellio has been selected to run the Greater Anglia rail franchise from next year and a series of improvements are expected to be made.

The Oyster card system - which is used by commuters in London to quickly pay for fares on public transport - will be extended to certain stations within the two counties.

Stations at Theobalds Grove, Hertford East, Cheshunt, Brentwood, Shenfield, Broxbourne, Waltham Cross, Rye House, St Margarets, and Ware will all be included in the initiative, Transport for London (TfL) confirmed.

"Instead of swapping between tickets once they arrive in London, Greater Anglia commuters will be able to pay for all of their travel using the ease and convenience of Oyster," commented TfL's director of customer experience Shashi Verma.

Earlier this month, representatives of the Competition Commission told the Financial Times that they wanted to see an Oyster card-like system introduced by regional bus companies in other parts of the UK.
