Transit purse added to Bolton smart cards
30 Sep 2009

People living in Bolton, Greater Manchester have been given a boost when it comes to travelling around their local area.

Bolton Council has launched the UK's first ever multi-purse smart card, which allows those who own the cards to pay for local authority services, items in various Bolton retailers and travel fares on the region's buses.

The pay-as-you-go travel purse, which is enabled by ITSO, is the result of a partnership between the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority, Arriva buses, Parkeon, ACT and sQuid - the eMoney payment network - as well as the local council.

Phil Stone, Managing Director of Arriva North West, said that the newly revamped contactless smart card makes bus travel more flexible.

"This is an exciting development in the smart card journey," he explained. "For the first time ever, passengers will be able to make online top ups to ITSO cards for pay-as-you-go travel on Arriva buses in Bolton."

Cardholders can pay for bus travel using this technology on more than 30 Arriva bus routes in the Bolton area.

The pay-as-you-go transit purse has been specially adapted by sQuid to work on any ITSO smart card and provides a secure platform for customers and operators to make electronic transactions.
