Transit systems using smart cards 'benefit many'
10 Jul 2009

Contactless smart cards used for transit systems could be beneficial for travellers, operators and the environment, it has been suggested.

Carole Evans of Environment Canterbury in New Zealand said the use of contactless smart cards similar to the Oyster in London offer increased flexibility and convenience.

Her comments came as plans for a new transit ticketing system for travel on buses and ferries in Christchurch and Timaru were announced.

She said fewer cash sales mean that travellers can get to their seats more quickly and that it would help with planning public transport better.

In addition, Ms Evans said the ease of using contactless smart cards when using transit systems could have an environmental benefit, as customers have "yet more reasons … to leave the car at home".

The Smart Card Alliance notes that contactless smart cards used in transit systems could increase the profitability of the operator.

It claims that increased convenience for those using the transit system means that more people will be likely to opt for such public transport and in turn contribute to the operator's bottom line.
