Two million weekly rail journeys now paid for with Oyster cards
9 Feb 2011

Around two million rail journeys are now paid for with Oyster cards every week, it has been revealed.

In January 2010, Oyster card readers were fitted at all 350 National Rail stations in the Greater London region and around 600,000 journeys were made in its opening month.

However, the new figures by Transport for London and the Association of Train Operating Companies have shown how pay-as-you-go customers are increasingly paying for travel with the smart cards.

Mayor Boris Johnson said: "Getting Oyster on National Rail has made a radical difference to people living in outer London. Many of who depend on overground rail to get around.

"I am pleased that the train operating companies worked with us to introduce this."

The most popular routes are those from the centre to the south of London, such as the Waterloo to Clapham Junction service.

Around 16 million journeys are made by train every week in London and the south east, according to the Office of Rail Regulation.
