US firm lays down foundations for new transit card scheme
4 Jun 2010

A New Jersey-based transit card scheme will soon be operational following the construction of smart card machines in the city, reports recordonline.com.

Travel authority NJ Transit has replaced the existing 587 machines with new vending machines at train stations along the Port Jervis Line.

Currently customers will be able to purchase tickets by cash, debit or credit card but passengers will soon be able to benefit from smart card travel once the new technology is introduced.

Card holders will profit from shorter queuing times at kiosks as transaction times will be significantly shortened while fares are also likely to be reduced.

Furthermore, the new machines will recall a user's recent purchases so regular commuters can find tickets quickly and easily.

Dan Stessel, a spokesman for NJ Transit, explained the reasoning behind the machines new colours.

He told the website: "We wanted the machines to be easily identifiable and to stand out within the station environment."
