Use of transit cards to be promoted in Delhi
30 Jan 2012
Delhi residents will be encouraged to use the city's transit card as part of a week-long series of events this week.
From January 30th until February 5th, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will promote the use of the smart card, which allows passengers on the city's metro system to pay for their journey without the need for cash.
Customer service staff at ticket offices will inform residents and tourists about the benefits of the smart card over the course of the week
"Commuters will be encouraged to use smart cards to save time instead of standing in long queues to purchase tokens, to avail ten per cent discount on every journey and for freedom of choice of originating and destination stations," a DMRC spokesperson said in a statement.
"The smart card gives users the freedom of choosing their originating and destination stations, and don't have to carry around change to buy tokens."
Around two thirds (65 per cent) of commuters on the Delhi metro use smart cards every day, with 12,000 smart cards sold each day.
