Victorian government considers new transit card system
28 Feb 2011
The government of Victoria in Australia is considering replacing their transit card system, it has been revealed.
Currently, the state uses the Myki transit card but this had a number of issues and now officials from technology firm Vix believe they can provide a better service.
Vix operates successful transport systems in Beijing, Salt Lake City, Seattle and Stockholm and now it wants to deploy its programme in Australia.
Steve Gallagher, Vix Technology chief executive, expressed his belief that the new transit card system would not be radically different from the Metcard system it operates elsewhere.
"We won't make the mistake of starting again. We won't try and reinvent the wheel," he said.
"We will use the excellent Metcard system and we'll extend it with the technology that's already in use."
Mr Gallagher added that the new system would save the Victorian government AUS$100 million (£63.2 million).
