We are an increasingly cashless society, says mayor
9 Dec 2009

Alternative methods of payment are needed in our "increasingly cashless society", according to an Australian Mayor.

David Smith, Mayor of Bunbury, commented that there is increasing demand for a variety of ways to pay for services such as parking.

The city has recently unveiled a new system known as iPark, which allows users to make cashless payments - eliminating the need to carry change or display a paper ticket.

Using the iPark system, people can instead pay for their parking using their mobile phone or online and the money is automatically debited from their account.

The Mayor commented that this new initiative will help keep parking options in the city up-to-date.

Cashless payments are currently being used in Bolton, Greater Manchester in the UK thanks to an initiative between sQuidcard, the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive and the localĀ council.

An extension of the Bolton smart card, the new cashless system allows users to load up a pre-paid card to purchase low-cost items, pay for publicĀ transit fares and access services such as libraries.
