Western Australia region launches cashless transit system
4 Jan 2010

Busselton in Western Australia has become the second region in the state to incorporate cashless ticketing into its public transportation system.

The Busselton-Dunsborough Mail reported that the SmartRider ticketing system has now been rolled out across all TransGeraldton and TransPerth services, as well as school-based buses run by South West Coach Lines.

According to Reece Waldock, chief executive officer of the public transportation authority, the extension of the SmartRider scheme this week follows last year's regional debut of the system.

"This means SmartRider cardholders can now easily access all their relevant free travel entitlements and concessions," he said.

Elsewhere in Australia, a contactless smart card system was recently set up for rail passengers in Melbourne. Known as myki, the scheme enables passengers to use swipe and go technology to pay their fare - and cut down on queuing times.

Closer to home, residents of Bolton in Greater Manchester are also enjoying the benefits of a cashless transit system.

People using Arriva buses in Bolton can pay for their journey using sQuidcard - a prepaid electronic money card that can be topped up online.
