Wider Oyster card usage 'will make travel simpler'
26 Nov 2009

Hundreds of thousands of rail passengers could find it easier to travel around London thanks to recent changes to the Oyster card system, it has been suggested.

Chairman of the Association of Train Operating Companies Tom Smith said the fact people will be able to use the contactless smart card - which is the brainchild of current New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority boss Jay Walder - at all 350 national rail stations in London from January 2nd is positive news.

Train companies and Transport for London have been working hard alongside the Department for Transport to make the move - which was announced earlier this week - possible, he added.

Transport Commissioner for the capital Peter Hendy also welcomed the move.

"London can now boast a truly integrated ticketing system that delivers ease and convenience for passengers," he explained. "This is excellent news, particularly for people living south of the river."
