Wokingham 'could get contactless payment transit system'
25 Nov 2011

Wokingham could soon be implementing a contactless payment transit system similar to the Oyster card scheme in London.

Keith Baker, councillor at Wokingham Borough Council, described this as potentially "excellent news" for the local area, with the initiative to be set up if a bid for £24.2 million of funding is successful, Get Wokingham reports.

"This bid is about supporting economic growth and improving sustainable transport," Mr Baker remarked, adding that he will be recommending that his colleagues support the bid for funding, which could drive "significant improvements" for local transport.

Outline suggestions for the scheme include smart ticketing systems and cycling and walking schemes, as well as better information for travellers.

This comes after Journal Live reported that improvements are likely to be made to the Metro system in the north-east of the country, including a contactless payment system. It is part of a £25 million initiative to making north Tyneside's ticketing system more user-friendly.
