Writer is 'a big fan' of smart cards for travel
28 Oct 2009

Writer Brian Gould has described himself as "an insufferable transit fanboy" due to his collection of travel smart cards from different countries around the world.

Commenting in his column for the Metro Edmonton, he revealed that his collection includes a San Francisco TransLink, a London Oyster card and two different offerings from Tokyo - the Suica and Pasmo.

His reflections on this modern method of paying for transport came as he announced that the Edmonton Transit System recently took a step closer to rolling out such a system more widely.

Using this payment method in the Canadian city would be welcomed by Mr Gould, although he joked that with such an "easy and convenient" way of paying he finds that he often forgets that he is spending any money at all.

Another city that uses smart cards for travel is Melbourne in Australia, while South African public transport authorities are considering introducing similar systems ahead of next year's football World Cup.
