Youngster calls for smart cards on Oxford transport
12 Apr 2011

A teenager has called for contactless smart cards to be introduced on Oxford's transport system

Alex Stevenson, who is 14 years old and a member of the county's youth parliament, recently met with Henley MP John Howell when he visited LangtreeSchool in Woodcote, the Henley Standard reports.

Alex called for a system similar to the Oyster Card scheme that is operated in London to be introduced for youngsters living in the area.

He suggested this will allow school kids and teenagers to save money when they use public transport.

Mr Howell said visiting the school was a "good opportunity to hear the views of younger people".

Alex was elected to the youth parliament in February and said the role has given him more confidence when it comes to public speaking.

Last week, it was announced that a contactless smart card payment system will be introduced on Nottingham's new tram lines, while old tickets and passes will be phased out.
