Transport industry 'ready for greater NFC implementation in 2011'
28 Mar 2011

Near Field Communications (NFC) is one of the top priorities in the world of financial payments for transit agencies in 2011, it has been suggested.

According to the Smart Card Alliance Transportation Council, 2010 was a busy year for the organisation as it worked closely with transport companies to develop contactless payments systems.

Alongside NFC, open bank card transactions and technology convergence will be top of the body's agenda for the coming 12 months, it added.

Council executive director Randy Vanderhoof said: "In the last few years, the transit and payments industries have become more closely linked. With regulations in the United States facing changes and new technologies like NFC emerging, it is a good time to seriously look at how these changes will affect the future of transit."

In a recent article for Electronics News, Isaac Leung said smartphones could become the most common way people make contactless payments, thanks to the development of NFC solutions.
