UK University expands contactless smart card system
17 May 2010

A UK university is set to launch a next-generation contactless smart card system later this year.

Midlands-based Keele University selected Fidelity Systems, in partnership with Magna Carta Chipcard Solutions, to deploy its cashless payment system.

The project will effectively introduce a single currency across the 617-acre campus, as users can make quick and easy transactions without the need for cash.

Fidelity Systems chairman Paul Lowsley expressed his belief that the integration of the system would be a great success.

He told the Business Financial Newswire website: "Of particular interest at Keele is the collaboration between the Student Union and the university to enable one common payment system shared by both using a single campus multi application card."

The company had made initial with the institution over a year ago, as they already had an existing relationship with the Students Union.

In 1998, Keele became one of the first British universities to introduce the Mifare contactless card, which could manage multiple applications on a single card.
