Gappers 'can join a cashless society' with prepaid cards
10 Jul 2009

Prepaid cards are one of the options for gap year travellers keen to join a cashless society, reports Scotland on Sunday.

One student, 21-year-old Gillian Smith, tells the publication of how she was able to link a six-month study placement with a subsequent one-month holiday in Europe.

Throughout her visit to the continent, she used a prepaid card, rather than her regular debit card, to secure her place in a cashless society.

"I did some research as I needed to find a cheap way to get money out while I was abroad," she explains.

"If I used my debit card it would work out quite expensive," she adds, explaining that the charges would mount up as she regularly withdrew money over the six months.

However, Scotland on Sunday adds that there is a "decent" choice of prepaid cards now available for travellers looking to join the cashless society.

Parent publication The Scotsman previously reported guidance from Emma Lunn of Moneywise, who argued that prepaid cards can be beneficial by meaning it is impossible to overspend while on a journey.
