White paper underlines importance of smart cards to US healthcare system

Smart cards will provide both the security and functionality required to store medical records in the US, it has been claimed.

The Smart Card Alliance (SCA) has released a new white paper which underlines the benefits of smart cards and how they can be incorporated into the current US healthcare system.

Randy Vanderhoof, executive director of the Smart Card Alliance (SCA), expressed his belief that it is key to strike a balance between accessibility and security of medical records as the two are often conflicting goals.

"This white paper shows how smart cards can help provide the combination of functionality and security that is essential to meaningful use of electronic health records," he said.

Among the benefits outlined by the white paper include the increased security of current electronic records as the smart cards can carry digital certificates which guarantee a high level of security.
