Wilkinsons trials new contactless payment scheme
31 Mar 2011
Wilkinsons is trialling a new scheme that could soon allow people to make purchases with contactless smart cards in its stores.
A total of 25 high street branches will be testing the system and, if successful, it may be rolled out across the retailer's 350 UK outlets.
Using Barclaycard technology, it is hoped the scheme will reduce the amount of time it takes consumers to make their purchases.
They will be able to pay for goods costing less than £15 by swiping their card across the reader, making transactions much easier.
A Wilkinson spokesperson said the change could be especially useful for those who have to shop at peak times when queues build up.
"We believe contactless will help those customers who are under time pressure and wish to buy goods below the £15 threshold," the representative added.
Barclays recently revealed that the number of payments made through its contactless systems has increased by 150 per cent over the past year.
