Smart cards - case study
A case study of Sheldon School, Wiltshire
Sheldon School in Chippenham, Wiltshire, working with sQuid and
Wiltshire County Council implemented sQuid cashless catering at
the school for children to pay for school dinners, using the latest
pre-pay contactless smart card technology.
Sheldon and sQuid cashless catering
Sheldon School teamed up with sQuid and Sodexo
(their contract caterers), to develop a new cashless
catering system.
sQuid developed the school card ordering process to
ensure that this would be as simple as possible, enabling
the school to keep track of free school meal entitlement too.
Pupils use their card to pay for their lunch, lost cards can
be cancelled immediately and any outstanding balances
are transferred to newly issued cards.
Parents know that dinner money is spent at school and
pupils don’t have to worry about carrying cash.
Impact on the school
- it’s quick and easy for pupils to use
- meal uptake improved
- pupil’s learn financial responsibility
- less cash on the school premises
- staff are freed up from cash handling to perform
other tasks
- free school meals (FSM) administered without stigma
