Contactless smart card payments
About Contactless technology
Contactless technology is currently enjoying its
entrance into the payment arena, but it’s taken a
long time to reach this point. Originally
developed by the British during World War II to
identify aircraft returning from mainland Europe,
it has taken sixty years to find its way into the
wallets of millions of people.
Now, consumer attitudes and behaviours towards
payment are changing. And, unlike with Chip and
PIN, it is not only card issuers that are driving this
change, it’s the consumers themselves. Central
to this is the convenience which contactless
affords. Fortunately, retailers are also finding it a
beneficial technology, with transactions being
completed between 24 and 40 percent quicker.
In December 2008, we commissioned an
independent research company to conduct the
Ingenico PayPolls Survey. Its aim was to provide
insights into consumer payment trends and
inclinations. Here, we share with you some of the
findings from this report.
• A third of respondents would prefer to use cards all the time than dig change out of their pockets
• 26% wished to replace all of their current cards with a single card
• Despite the £10 limit for Contactless and mobile payments, consumers would be comfortable spending £35.10 and £30.10 respectively, on average
• The average value of cash respondents carry is £29.30.
This shows strong support for cash replacement given that card holders are keen on paying over £35 on Contactless cards.
